Senior Pictures for Kids Who Hate Senior Pictures (Kansas City)

Stag & Bird is a senior portrait studio in Kansas City's West Bottoms for teens who hate senior pictures: alternative, goth, punk, queer, artsy, and camera-shy seniors. Sessions run from $275 to $2,950, with no forced smiles and no cheesy poses.
Kitchen. Thursday. Somebody's eating cereal at 4pm.
"So I was looking at senior picture photographers..." "No." "You didn't even let me finish." "You were going to say senior pictures." "Grandma wants one." "Grandma can have my school picture." "Your school picture looks like a hostage photo." "Yeah. That's why I'm not doing it again."

If you just lived that, you're in the right place. Stag & Bird photographs Kansas City seniors who hate senior pictures. The goth kid, the punk kid, the queer kid, the anxious kid, the kid who'd rather be at band practice, and the one who's only agreeing because you promised Chipotle after. We don't do the fake smile, we don't make them stand by a fence holding a football they've never touched, and we don't care if they wear black head to toe.
Honestly, these are our favorite sessions.
Twelve years of picture day will do this to a kid.
Comb your hair, chin down, little more, say cheese, next. Then a sheet of wallet sizes shows up in a plastic sleeve and everyone says it's cute and it is absolutely not cute.
When a senior tells you they hate pictures, they usually mean one of these:
Being told how to smile. Nothing kills a face faster than "show some teeth your mom paid for!"
Being stared at by strangers. Posing in the middle of a park while a dog walker watches is a special kind of hell.
Looking like somebody else. The khakis. The polo. The cardigan Mom bought at Kohl's last week.
Not knowing what to do with their body. Hands especially. Every human alive is weird about their hands.
Hating how they look right now. Skin, weight, braces, a haircut that went wrong in August. This one's real and we take it seriously.
All of that is fixable. None of it is fixed by a photographer yelling "just be natural!" None of it.

How we PHOTOGRAPH seniors who'd rather be anywhere else
We talk to the kid first. Not the parent, the kid. What music they're into, what they'd wear on a Saturday, what they're dreading, what they'd want their friends to see. That conversation shapes the whole session.
Then on the day:
No "say cheese." Ever. We get real expressions by talking, joking, and occasionally being ridiculous ourselves. The smile shows up on its own or it doesn't, and some of the best senior portraits we've ever made have zero teeth in them.
We pick spots where nobody's watching. Alleys, warehouses, the studio, a record store. Not the middle of the busiest park in the city on a Sunday.
They wear what they actually wear. Band tees, black jeans, combat boots, thrifted everything, their grandpa's jacket. If it's them, it goes on camera.
We direct, so they don't have to guess. Clear, simple prompts. Where to put their hands, where to look, when to move. Nobody's standing there wondering what to do.
We bring their stuff into it. The skateboard, the guitar, the sketchbook, the car they rebuilt, the dog.
We edit like it matters. Skin gets handled with care. Acne, scars, whatever they're self-conscious about, we talk about it ahead of time and handle it the way they want.
Oh, and parents, if your kid loosens up the second you walk to the car, we'll tell you. Kindly. With love. And then tell you to stay there.
Parents: how to get a yes out of them
You probably can't win this one by insisting. (You've tried. We know.) Try this instead.
Let them scroll our work first. Show them the seniors in their natural vibes, the ones holding records, the ones not smiling. A lot of kids flip once they see senior pictures don't have to look like the ones in the mall kiosk.
Hand them the wheel. Let them pick the location, the outfits, the music in the car. It's their senior year, and they'll show up differently when it's their session.
Make a deal. Ten minutes of the shot Grandma wants, the rest of the session is theirs. Everybody wins, and Grandma never has to see the rest.
Skip the pep talk. "You're going to look so handsome!" lands about as well as you'd expect. Let us do the convincing.
Book hair and makeup if they're even slightly into it. For kids who are self-conscious about their skin, a little coverage changes how they walk into the session. That goes for your masculine-presenting kid too, and nobody has to call it makeup.
The hardest part is getting them in the car. After that, it's our job.
Senior session ideas for kids who hate senior sessions
We create it around the thing they already love and half the battle's over. A few we've done or would kill to do in Kansas City:
The record store kid. We've shot seniors digging through crates at Gnarly Hustle in Raytown. Headphones on, flipping through vinyl, nobody asking them to smile.
The vintage kid. Vintage Rex in the West Bottoms, thrifted fit, the whole aesthetic.
The industrial kid. West Bottoms warehouses, freight doors, brick, rust, and an alley next to Union Station that has better light at 6pm than most studios.
The goth kid. All black, moody light, our studio. Dark is welcome here. We've got the logo to prove it.
The musician. Their guitar, their drum kit, their garage, their band. Bring the band.
The car kid. The truck they rebuilt, the beater they love, the hood they want to sit on.
The artist. Their sketchbook, their paint-covered jeans, their bedroom wall.
The "I just want it over with" kid. One location, one outfit, in and out. Our Cap & Gown Micro is fifteen minutes flat.
